Help Is On the Way for Church Treasurers

Whether your church treasurer is a veteran of decades or brand new at the job, he or she will reap valuable information from the handy financial resource provided for churches by Pensions and Benefits USA. Reporting Procedures for Congregations, is prepared and updated annually by Dan Busby, CPA and president of the Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability (ECFA). Dan is one of the nation’s top authorities on church and clergy taxation and compensation matters. Having presented hundreds of seminars on the subjects, he knows the questions most often asked and answers them in language you don’t have to be an accountant to understand.

How does a church handle in-kind gifts? Is money spent for mission trips tax deductible? How can my church provide extra benefits for my pastor, and avoid additional taxes? Your treasurer will find answers to these and other difficult questions in this indispensable resource.

Reporting Procedures for Congregations is mailed each January to every church in the United States. Be sure to watch for it in the mail, along with the resource, Preparing Tax Returns for Clergy. This booklet, also by Dan Busby, simplifies the preparation of ministers’ taxes. It walks pastors, line-by-line through Form 1040. Some pastors who have their returns professionally done, forward their copies of Preparing Tax Returns for Clergy to their preparers to make sure they have the latest information on ministerial taxation.

Pastors and church treasurers will find an array of valuable resources on church-related financial matters found in the Church/Tax Resources and FAQ sections of our website.
