End of Year Financial Resources AvailableWith 2017 drawing to a close, it’s a good time to think about ministerial compensation and tax matters for the coming year. Many resources are available from Pensions and Benefits USA at www.pbusa.org

A good place to start is with our Tax Memos, such as Memo 4 – Strategies for Structuring Ministerial Compensation, Memo 5 – Minimizing Income Taxes for Church Employees, Memo 12 – Who Is a Minister for Tax Purposes?, and Memo 13 – The Minister’s Housing Allowance. There’s also a compensation calculator to assist in developing a salary package.

As 2017 fades into the new year and thoughts turn to April 15 (actually April 16 in 2018), you may find assistance with Memo 3 - Tax and Reporting Procedures for Churches, and Memo 11 – Auto and Other Business Expense Reimbursements. Plus, there are the annual tax guides for ministers and churches prepared by the Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability (ECFA). These booklets are invaluable in helping both ministers and church treasurers understand the ins and outs of handling tax payments and financial reporting to the government. The 2018 guides will be posted in early January at both pbusa.org and ChurchExcel—the ECFA’s free online news and financial web resource.
